The Blast Furnace/Blast Oxygen Furnace route was developed for the production of high quality primary steel. It is the most successful route to produce primary steel. As the availability of scrap metal and electricity increases, the number of EAF (Electric Arc Furnaces) will increase to recycle the scrap. The EAF steel will not be sufficient to cover the steel demand in the world, and both production routes have a bright future.
In the beginning of the 60ies, the refractory lining of the lower part up to the middle stack of blast furnaces was turned successfully to carbon and graphite materials.
