Aerospace
Our Applications
Brake technology for aircraft
Aircraft brake disks have to fulfill many different functions, not only during landing but also in taxiing on the runway or aborting a take-off. In such situations, the brake disks are subjected to extreme mechanical and thermal stresses.
Brake disks produced from carbon-fiber-reinforced carbon (C/C) based on SGL Group precursor materials are used in the world’s best-known aircraft. PANOX® fibers are the precursor material for this application. Their excellent textile processing properties make it possible to produce brake disks that can withstand temperatures of over 1000°C. Our brake disks are manufactured from preformed nonwoven products, which are then carbonized into a strong C/C material.
Lightweight construction for aerospace
Materials and designs for the aerospace industry must be lightweight yet reliable and safe, even under extreme stresses. Besides high strength and rigidity, a very high level of fire protection properties is vitally important. Lightweight construction is intended to increase performance and cut fuel consumption. These requirements can be met with carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials.
