Iron, Steel and Ferro-Alloy
In a blast furnace, iron ore is reduced to pig iron. In this process, the iron ore and coke are supplied through the top of the furnace. As this charge of material descends through the furnace it meets a counter-flow of reducing gas, which reduces the ore to liquid iron at a temperature of around 1500°C.
For blast furnace operation, heat-resistant lining of the shaft-like inner chamber is crucially important. Since the 1960s, carbon and graphite products have been successfully used for this application. This development, in which SGL Group played a key role, led to a significant increase in productivity and blast furnace life span.
The most comprehensive range of high-quality furnace lining products in the industry enables us to provide tailored solutions for virtually all customer requirements. Our range comprises carbon and graphite materials, including supermicroporous and microporous ceramic carbon and the associated adhesives and cements. Through intensive research activity, further innovative products and solutions are continually being developed.
Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a strong inorganic acid which is widely used in the chemical and other industries, e.g. for chlorination processes, production of vinyl chloride (plastics), TDI/MDI (polyurethanes), pickling of steel, pH control, neutralization, and regeneration of ion exchangers.
Our corrosion resistant systems and equipment solutions enable safe and efficient synthesis and processing of HCl gas and HCl acid. We have built more than 500 HCl synthesis units, among those the biggest synthesis units worldwide. Our innovative steam generation, two pressure distillation and extractive distillation systems are designed to maximize energy efficiency of HCl processing.
Hydrofluoric acid (HF)
Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is the core component for fluorination reactions. It is the precursor for numerous pharmaceuticals and diverse materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). HF also plays a key role in the procuction of aluminium and uranium.
We offer a comprehensive range of corrosion resistant systems and equipment solutions for the processing of hydrofluoric acid. Examples are systems for the cracking of HCFCs to HF as well as SiC heat exchanger for steel pickling and chemical etching of glass.

Steel production (Electric arc furnace)
Steel is produced in electric arc furnaces by melting electrically charged scrap metal with an electric arc. The furnace normally consists of a refractory-lined vessel covered with a retractable roof through which one or several electrodes are introduced into the furnace. The electrodes conduct electric current, which forms an arc between the scrap metal and the electrodes and supplies the heat to melt the material.
Graphite electrodes from SGL Group ensure a smooth, uninterrupted production process. The robust graphite material withstands the high temperatures and stresses in the furnace. Thanks to the segmented construction of the electrodes with screwed joints, spent segments can be replaced without interrupting steel production.
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is a strong inorganic acid which is widely used in the chemical and other industries. Principal uses include lead-acid batteries, ore processing, fertilizer manufacturing, oil refining, waste water processing and chemical synthesis.
We offer a comprehensive range of corrosion resistant system and equipment solutions for the processing of sulfuric acid. Examples are systems for the dilution of concentrated acid and equipment for the reconcentration of diluted acid.© 2000-2017 SGL Carbon SE
