Our Applications

Epichlorohydrine (EPC) is a core chemical in the production of epoxy resins which are used in coatings, adhesives and plastics. Moreover EPC is used in the production of synthetic glycerine, textiles, paper, inks, dyes, solvents, surfactants and pharmaceuticals. EPC is made from allyl chloride, which itself is made by chlorination of propene with HCl as a by-product.

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a strong inorganic acid which is widely used in the chemical and other industries, e.g. for chlorination processes, production of vinyl chloride (plastics), TDI/MDI (polyurethanes), pickling of steel, pH control, neutralization, and regeneration of ion exchangers.

Our corrosion resistant systems and equipment solutions enable safe and efficient synthesis and processing of HCl gas and HCl acid. We have built more than 500 HCl synthesis units, among those the biggest synthesis units worldwide. Our innovative steam generation, two pressure distillation and extractive distillation systems are designed to maximize energy efficiency of HCl processing.

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is the core component for fluorination reactions. It is the precursor for numerous pharmaceuticals and diverse materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). HF also plays a key role in the procuction of aluminium and uranium.

We offer a comprehensive range of corrosion resistant systems and equipment solutions for the processing of hydrofluoric acid. Examples are systems for the cracking of HCFCs to HF as well as SiC heat exchanger for steel pickling and chemical etching of glass.

Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) are high tonnage products which are mainly used for the production of polyurethanes. The synthesis of MDI and TDI comprises a phosgenation step, in which hydrochloric acid is formed as a by-product.

Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is widely used in the chemical and in the food industry, e.g. for the production of phosphate based fertilizers and phosphonates for water treatment.

We offer a comprehensive range of corrosion resistant equipment for the production and processing of phosphoric acid. Examples are equipment for the concentration of wet process acid and for the purification of concentrated acid. The biggest heat exchangers, columns and pumps in use have been designed and produced by SGL Group.

Polysilicon is a key component in the production of photovoltaic panels for the solar industry and wafers for the semiconductor industry. Polysilicon can be produced by decomposition of trichlorosilane at high temperatures (Siemens reactor process). During this process hydrochloric acid is formed as by-product.

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is a strong inorganic acid which is widely used in the chemical and other industries. Principal uses include lead-acid batteries, ore processing, fertilizer manufacturing, oil refining, waste water processing and chemical synthesis.

Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is one of most important commodity chemicals. Almost all VCM is used for the production of polyvinylchloride (PVC). PVC ist the second largest thermoplastics behind polyethylene. PVC applications include furniture, flooring and window frames, pipes, medical supplies and clothing. VCM is thermally cracked from ethylene dichloride (EDC), with HCl as a by-product.
